Fondue Etiquette

Aside from being a unique dining experience, fondue can be the ultimate romantic meal. But because fondue is a communal dish, fondue eaters should conform to basic rules of fondue etiquette.

Fondue etiquette ranges from common-sensical to amusing to silly:

Employ proper fondue technique:

Use your fondue fork to spear bite-sized morsels of food, then dip and swirl it into the sauce. Then, hold your fondue fork over the sauce, allowing any excess to drip back into the pot. You can also bring your plate up under the bite to avoid dripping as well.

Good Fondue Table Manners

Some people consider it rude—or unsanitary-- to allow your lips or tongue to touch the fondue fork. If you are eating cheese fondue you and the dipped morsel is too hot to take directly with your lips, you are permitted to use your dinner fork to slide the food off your fondue fork and onto your plate. You can use the same technique with meat fondues. To eat meat fondue, spear a piece of meat and plunge it in the hot oil. Keep it in the oil until the meat is cooked to your liking. Remove the fork and place it on your plate. Use your dining fork to slide the meat off the fondue fork. Use your regular fork to both dip the meat in the sauce and eat the meat. The same technique will work for chocolate fondue at the end of your meal.

Never dip your food into the pot with your fingers.

It is unsanitary, disgusting and dangerous as you can burn yourself on the hot sauce. Always dip using a fondue fork and make sure that the food at the end of the fork is secure on the fork.

Don’t Double Dip.

Once a bite has been taken out of a dipped morsel it should never be returned to the pot for a second dip. Use a fresh morsel of food for every dip.

Respect the Etiquette of Fondue Tradition

Traditionalists say if you drop a piece of food into the pot, you have to kiss the person next to you? Depending who is next to you, this fondue tradition can be very romantic!. However, there is also another tradition that says that if you drop food into the fondue pot you have to buy a round of drinks for the table. You can pick the tradition that works best for you!
